This medium flavored, single origin roast comes to us from the Bukonzo Organic Farmers Cooperative Union located in Rwenzori, Uganda. Before forming as a farmer cooperative, the Bukonzo tribe had to leave their homes due to destruction caused during the Great African War. When the Bukonzo tribe returned to their homes, all their coffee trees had been uprooted. Unfortunately, this isn’t uncommon. Often during times of conflict, farmers would tear up their coffee trees or physically move the trees when being forced to leave home – forcing farmers to have to start over. In 2004, the Bukonzo tribe developed what we know now as the Bukonzo Organic Farmers Cooperative Union to promote the organic production of Arabica coffee. Bukonzo is located on the western boarder of the Rwenzori Mountains (Uganda) and the Congo’s Kivu Region and is made up of 1,200 members.
