Just Coffee Cooperative

Ecuador Loja

FAPECAFES is an umbrella association of seven small producers centered in the southern Loja region of Ecuador, approximately 100 miles from the country's border with Peru. We were lucky enough to meet these amazing growers through Madison-based Working Capital for Community Needs (WCCN) in 2012. Coffee makes up a very small percentage of Ecuador's exports and like much of Central America, the country was hit hard by La Roya. We are fortunate to be able to offer an impressive coffee from these producers.

FAPECAFES farmers invest in planting fruit trees, such as banana, orange, lime, papaya and yucca, to provide shade for coffee plants. This not only allows them to grow food for consumption or market, but also provides a habitat for birds and other animals.  The farmers are also working toward phytosanitary conditions (measures to control plant diseases) on farms, on crop diversification projects, and prohibit the use of agrochemicals.

This year's crop features medium acidity that brightens slightly as it cools and offers flavors of cacao nib, cherry and graham cracker.
